| Model (AI) | In AI, the trained system that results from applying a learning algorithm to data, and that makes predictions or generates outputs. Artificial Intelligence |
| Model collapse | The degradation in quality that can occur when AI models are trained repeatedly on content generated by other AI models rather than by humans. Artificial Intelligence |
| Model Organism | A species that has been widely studied, usually because it is easy to maintain and breed in a laboratory. Scientific discoveries in model organisms can often tell us a lot about the workings of many other organisms, too. A few examples of common model organisms are fruit flies, mice, zebrafish, and the bacteria E. coli. Science General |
| Mole | The SI unit for amount of substance, equal to about 6.022 x 10^23 particles (Avogadro's number). Science General |
| Molecule | Two or more atoms chemically bonded together, such as water (H2O). Science General |
| Momentum | The product of an object's mass and velocity, which is conserved in collisions. Science General |
| Monovalent vaccine | A vaccine designed to protect against a single strain or type of a pathogen. Vaccines |
| Montreal Protocol | A 1987 international treaty that phased out ozone-depleting substances such as CFCs. Because many of those substances are also greenhouse gases, it has also helped slow climate change. Climate Change |
| Moon landing hoax | The false claim that the Apollo Moon landings were staged. It is contradicted by physical samples, independent tracking, and retroreflectors left on the lunar surface. Science Literacy |
