How we found out evolution is true

Video overview
In this TEDxNTU talk (2013), historian of science John van Wyhe, director of Darwin Online, starts from a puzzle. When Darwin published On the Origin of Species in 1859, the world was far more religious than today, yet scientists accepted evolution within about 15 years. Today there is vastly more evidence, but evolution is still treated as controversial. To explain the gap, he retraces how evolution was actually discovered.
What it covers
- Early creation beliefs, including Ussher’s 6,000-year-old Earth
- How fossils were reinterpreted, from “tongue stones” to Steno’s rock layers
- Hutton’s deep time and Cuvier’s proof of extinction
- Ichthyosaurs, dinosaurs and the fossil record of progressive change
- Darwin’s Beagle fossils and Galápagos birds, Wallace’s parallel discovery, and Archaeopteryx
Why it matters
The talk shows that evolution became accepted through decades of accumulating evidence, not ideology. That makes it a useful corrective to claims that evolution is “just a theory.”
