Introduction
Scientific research doesn't speak for itself, and the person best positioned to translate it isn't a teacher, a journalist, or an engaged citizen - it's the researcher who did the work. Secondhand explanations lose nuance, and only the scientist closest to the data can speak with full authority about what it does and doesn't show, catch a misrepresentation before it spreads, and answer the hard follow-up questions that separate genuine understanding from a talking point.

Credibility compounds this. Research shows that when scientists engage directly with the public - through op-eds, town halls, or social media - trust in the finding itself increases in a way that secondhand relay rarely achieves; hearing from the source carries a weight that a teacher summarizing someone else's work cannot replicate. That direct engagement also has to be a dialogue, not a lecture: listening to concerns and naming uncertainty is something only the person who actually ran the study can do with real authority.
This is why the burden can't simply be outsourced to science communicators or educators. Teachers and journalists are essential relays, but they're explaining someone else's findings at one remove; they didn't run the experiment, and they can't speak to what surprised the researchers, what the data didn't show, or where legitimate scientific disagreement remains. When scientists opt out and leave that space to intermediaries alone, something is lost even when the intermediaries do their job well - and misinformation, which fills any silence, is often quickest to occupy the space when the person who could speak with the most authority isn't the one speaking.
Policy decisions raise the stakes further. Climate, public health, and biotechnology choices get made whether or not scientists show up to testify, serve on advisory panels, or run for office - and when researchers leave that role to non-experts, decisions get made with less rigor behind them, not fewer decisions overall. Advocacy, in this sense, isn't a partisan act or a distraction from "real" work; it's a civic responsibility that follows directly from being the person who knows the evidence best, and as AI, gene editing, and climate change raise the stakes of getting these decisions wrong, that responsibility only grows heavier.
